Temperature-sensitive male-sterility system in pigeonpea uri icon

  • The present communication reports successful breedingof the first temperature-sensitive male-sterilitysystem in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.). Thismaterial was derived from a cross involving Cajanussericeus (Benth. ex Bak.), a wild relative of pigeonpea,and a cultivar (ICPA 85010). The selections demonstratedmarked changes in the fertility status of theplants under field conditions in different temperatureregimes. At ?25?C the plants were completely malesterile,while at ?24?C the same plants became fullymale-fertile. These genotypes can be used to develop atwo-line hybrid breeding system in pigeonpea
