Models for estimating the food consumption of tilapias uri icon

  • Two approaches are presented for the estimation of food consumption in wild and farmed tilapias. The first which relies on diurnal changes in stomach contents is illustrated with three examples pertaining to Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The second is a multiple regression model which allows estimation of daily ration (R sub(1)) in tilapia (genera Oreochromis, Sarotherodon and Tilapia). The model was derived from empirical estimates of R sub(1) in 55 populations of marine and freshwater fishes from temperate and tropical habitats, including 16 populations of(mainly) African tilapias. This model allows estimation of R sub(1) for different food types in natural and captivetilapias, and should be particularly useful for parametrization of pond dynamic models. The mathematical and conceptual relationships between these two approaches are discussed
