Multidisciplinary assessment of the fisheries in San Miguel Bay, Philippines uri icon

  • San Miguel Bay, located in the southwestern part of Luzon in the Pacific coast of the Philippines, is characterised by a multigear and multispecies fishery. An overview is provided of the process and approach in the implementation of the Resource and Ecological Assessment (REA) of San Miguel Bay under the Fisheries Sector Programme together with the key features of the Integrated Coastal Fisheries Management (ICFM) Plan for the Bay. Five interrelated research components were implemented as follows: 1) Situational analysis; 2) Capture fisheries assessment; 3) Ecological habitat assessment; 4) Socioeconomic and policy analysis; and 5) Integration of results and management implications. The experience in San Miguel Bay shows that an integrated, multidisciplinary and multisectoral approach allows fuller evaluation of the issues and impacts on fisheries and a more comprehensive evaluation of appropriate management strategies and interventions. Such an approach best promotes sustainability of fisheries and benefits derived from it
