African wood density database uri icon

abstract

  • African wood density database is a compilation of wood density values for over 900 tree species, both indigenous and exotics found in Africa. Wood density (wood biomass per unit volume) is held as an important trait for estimating stored biomass and carbon investment per unit volume of tree stem. The database borrows from published literature and is intended to serve as a guide to support tree and vegetation carbon monitoring work. Several caveats that apply when using wood density values for carbon estimation have been reviewed and highlighted. This resource was developed as part of The Global Environment Facility (GEF) support to ICRAF under the Carbon Benefits Project (CBP)
