  • Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) is a protein-rich pulsecrop which can grow well under soil moisture limitedenvironments. The crop can play a significant role in meetingthe challenges of global food security under the loomingthreats of climate change, soil degradation and risingproduction costs. This would be possible through fasttrackbreeding of new cultivars with high and stableperformances. This paper reviews the achievements ofpigeonpea breeding research and suggests the growthtrajectory for future programmes related to breeding ofhigh yielding pure line and hybrid cultivars. In the past fewdecades, three pigeonpea breeding milestones have madetheir mark. These include development of (i) mediummaturing disease resistant pigeonpea cultivars for greateryield and stability, (ii) high yielding early maturingpigeonpea cultivars for area expansion involving newproduction niches, and (iii) a trend setting hybrid breedingtechnology for breaking the decades-old low yield plateau.These innovations are showing their positive impact onpigeonpea production and productivity and hold promisefor achieving nutritional security of masses in the country
