  • Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is one of the major cerealcrops consumed in India after rice (Oryza sativa) andwheat (Triticum aestivum). The crop is primarilyproduced in Maharashtra and southern states ofKarnataka and Andhra Pradesh. These three statestogether account for close to 80% of the all-Indiaproduction. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan arethe other states producing sorghum. India is the thirdlargest producer of sorghum in the world with 7.15million tons during 2007 and almost entire production ofsorghum (95%) in the country comes from the aboveregions/states (GOI 2007)
