  • Urban and peri-urban population is rising rapidly in thedeveloping countries. The available estimates reveal that by 2020 thedeveloping countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America will be thehome of some 75 per cent of all urban dwellers (CGIAR, 2003).India is no exception, where urban population has been increasing atan alarming rate of more than 3 per cent annually.
