Global sorghum Genetic enhancement processes at ICRISAT uri icon

abstract

  • The global production of sorghum in 2003 is about 59 million t with an average productivity of 1.34t ha-1 (FAO http://www.fao.org). Despite advances in breeding improved cultivars, productivity hasincreased only marginally. Productivity recorded at research stations in African countries and inIndia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand in Asia was 3.5-4.0 t ha-1 in the rainy season. In China, it isabout 12 t ha-1 at research stations but only 0.8-2.5 t ha-1 in farmers? fields. This productivity gap ofabout 9-11 t ha-1 remains a challenge for agricultural scientists and extension specialists to bridge.Several biotic and abiotic stresses account for this gap
