  • Submerged rice fields are considered an importantsource of atmospheric methane and attention is focussedon mitigating methane emissions from wetland ricesoils. We assess here the prospects of reducing methaneemission from flooded rice soils by using nitrificationinhibitors. Nitrification inhibitors retard nitrification,affect nitrogen transformations other than nitrification,and reduce nitrous oxide production in upland soils. The review of recent literature indicates that nitrification inhibitors have the ability to inhibit or retard methane production and emission in submerged rice soils
