  • Agricultural research can be made efficient and effectivethrough multidisciplinary and inter-institutionalcollaboration by teams of scientists from both publicand private sectors. In the past, while public sector research played a major role in resource-limited areas and food cropsspecies, the private sector played a major role in moreproductive areas involving high-value horticultural andcommercial crops species. However, that distinction is nowbecoming blurred, and the scenarios have changed. Returnsto research appeared to be higher in marginal areas and thatthere were complementarities and synergies to be exploitedbetween the public and private sectors in all areas ofagricultural research and development
