Development and characterization of genetic stocks in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) resistant to downy mildew uri icon

abstract

  • Downy mildew or green car caused bySclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet. isthe mosl important disease of pearl millet(Pe1111isetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. emend.Stuntz). This causes severe loss in grain yielddue to complete or partial conversion offlorets into leafy structures (Singh et al. 1993).Since host-plant resistance is the mostfeasible method to control this disease. about300 genetic stocks developed from the spontaneouslyoccurring mutants in the world collectionof pearl millet gcrmplasm werescreened for resistance to downy mi I dew. Thispaper contains the origin of the mutants anddevelopment of genetic stocks, describestheir morphological and agronomical characters.and gives Lheir potential use in pearlmillet improvement
