Research and Development of Hybrid Pigeonpea uri icon

abstract

  • The discovery of stable genetic male-sterility in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh) and its non- additivegenetic variation for yield has paved the way for breeding hybrids. Male-sterile genes have been transferredto promising cultivars to develop male-sterile lines. ICPH 8 the first hybrid pigeonpea was released in 1991.This bulletin describes the advances made in hybrid pigeonpea research and the factors involved in thecommercial exploitation of hybrid seed production
