  • Roots inoculated with R. bataticola (Macrophomina phaseolina) showed disintegration of cortical tissues while mycelium and sclerotial bodies plugging the xylem were seen in longitudinal sections. The sudden collapse of infected plants at the pod-filling stage may be due to this plugging of the xylem vessels
