Sources of Disease Resistance in Pearl Millet uri icon

abstract

  • Principles of resistance screening, definitions ofresistance and susceptiblity, and summaries ofseveral years trials with downy mildew, ergot, smut, and rust are presented. The greatest numberand most effective sources of resistance werefound in African germplasm, particularly from thecentral region of West Africa, which is the centerof origin and diversity of this crop. Results arepresented indicating the feasibility ofbuilding-up levels of resistance through recurrentselection in initially susceptible populations.Resistance to ergot has been the most difficult todevelop but lines are now available with a highlevel of ergot resistance in India, combined withresistance to downy mildew and smut
