Effect of carbofuran on transformation of urea nitrogen in soil uri icon

abstract

  • THE effect of Carbofuran at 10 and 50 ppm of soil ontransformation of urea nitrogen in a sandy loam (PH7-7) was studied in laboratory. The insecticide had noeffect on urea hydrolysis but moderately inhibited bothconversion of NH4+ to N02- and N02- to N03-, theeffect being pronounced at the higher rate but lastedupto 2 weeks only. The results 0'£ the study alongwith other evidences suggest that under normal fieldapplication rates, carbofuran may have little effect onthe hydrolysis as well as nitrification of urea nitrogenin soils with pH in the alkaline range
